Twas the night before...

Posted by kuri, ping, the pinglet, & mini-ping on 7/18/2009
...the Pinglet's birthday, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring...well, except for a tiny-almost-2-year-old bug, who just last night came down with a 39 degree fever, topped off with a swollen eye. Yes, it is the traditional "birthday sickies and blues," which means that party plans have been cancelled, for yet another year

Her first birthday was called off for a spate of the 'runs, which showed up the morning of her birthday and proceeded to last an additional two weeks. This then turned into a yeast diaper rash. The Pinglet really knows how to work an illness, let me tell you.

My plan was to have a kick-ass second birthday that was going to incorporate both her first and second birthdays. We had it all planned: the pool was ready, the food and a new birthday dress (referred to by the Pinglet as "happy, happy") were purchased, and invites were sent out to 3 of her little friends who were going to join us for a lovely afternoon.

That has all gone by the wayside, as Ping and I will be left to wipe up snot and tears from a crying child who, although she is burning up with fever and is highly contagious, wants to share the wealth with her Frenemy, M

A quick aside here is necessary. The Pinglet has been sick for about 2 weeks. I was happy with this because I figured that by the time her birthday rolled around, she would already by on the road to recovery. How naive of me. Just to give you a  snapshot of our lives for the past two week, here are some of the featured ailments that have been hanging around:
  • A runny nose (but not a summer cold! as "diagnosed" by a doctor later in the week, because we ended up visiting the clinic as she ended up with a...
  • ...Fever which resulted in a horrible all-over body rash, that made me keep her indoors for fear of being quarantined somewhere. And of course, which she ended up giving to her Frenemy. A fact which her mom greatly appreciated, I know. This was then followed by a bout of...
  • ...Diarrea, because a Pinglet without this ailment can no longer be referred to as the Pinglet. I think she was reliving her first birthday. All these ailments, plus some of the new ones that were getting ready to make an appearance resulted in her having...
  • ...Night wakings for a week, as in waking every THIRTY minutes throughout the night. This ended up being an actual...
  • ...summer cold (a new diagnosis from another doctor, which includes a sore throat, headache, runny nose, and cold sores in your mouth. Yum.) The summer cold then morphed into a...
  • ...high fever yesterday, which didn't disappear overnight. We brought her to the doctor and a blood test revealed that she has a high white blood cell count, which means that she has an infection somewhere (WBC count was 19,000--2x the normal amount). But doesn't have strep. And then, to top this all off, she wakes up from a four hour catnap (i.e. napping but waking up every 30 seconds, or so it felt) with a...
  • ...Swollen eye! Not sure where this comes in but it coincided with her high fever so I'm figuring that it has something to do with that.
I'm looking over this list and I know I missed something...

Anyway, this is all coupled with the fact that the Pinglet gave both Ping and I her "summer cold" and I spent one day this past week seriously contemplating putting her into a babysitting service at the local play center for an hour just so I could catch some zzzzz's in the library corner. No such luck as they were already closed for the day.

This year probably won't find me posting pictures of her on her actual birthday since I'll probably be trying to handle a cranky child who has a fever, which doesn't actually leave me with any free hands to tackle recording equipment. But here is a picture of a healthy Pinglet, ready to take on the world. It's been an adventure so far!

10 of you feeling verklempt. Tawlk amongst yourselves:

At least she's still too young to really realize what she's missing. So will you re-schedule or just have a REALLY super third birthday party?

oh no! i'm so sorry to hear this. i want to say that we will be there if you reschedule but i have a sneaking suspicion my kids were exposed to chicken pox this morning (but not earlier in the weekend so i'm pretty sure we didn't expose GW's kids.) so we might have to self-quarantine for a couple of weeks. argh!!

i hope you're all doing well and that the pinglet is recovering!!

Hi Christine! Thanks for your comments on my blog- I feel so bad, I rarely get to update my own blog anymore let alone catch up and comment on others! Sorry to see that little Nao-chan is sick for her birthday! Don't wait til her third birthday, just wait til she's better and then have a grand ol' shindig. She has no idea of the timing anyways, at this point its more for the parents I think (I enjoyed Jonah's first birthday very much :) I hope she feels better soon and you too! Hey I just found out about this place called FAMILY SUPPORT in my town and I heard they have them all over the country??? Not sure about that but check into it. It only costs 2000 yen to join and you can get people to watch your kids for you at your place or theirs, if you have to work or something (or sleep, or clean). It costs 300 yen an hour! They also taxi kids around from school to clubs and things. Amazing! We're all signed up and hopefully going to start using them next week or the week after! The babysitters are mostly" grandmothers" and have to undergo some training too. I'll see if I can find out more about similar orgs in other cities.

Christelle, thanks for the info about the Family Support services. We have something similar here, but they're pretty strict on what exactly they can do, so it doesn't really work out too well for us (We've never actually been able to use the service for some reason or another). I'm still on the lookout though! :)

Belated birthday greetings pinglet. I hope you're giving mummy and daddy a bit of a break now. You may never get a birthday party at this rate. Marina wants to see a picture of your happy happy. (that doesn't sound too good unless you know it's only about a dress)
