World traveler

Posted by kuri, ping, the pinglet, & mini-ping on 6/06/2008
Last week, the Pinglet took her first trip on a plane to the U.S. We had originally been planning to go at Christmas, and Ping--being the planner that he is--was going to set up a "practice run" from Kyushu to Hokkaido in the fall to see how she would be on the plane.

We dived into it headfirst instead. A 24-hour trip from Kyushu to New York, with a 14-hour direct flight thrown in for a little variety. Can you smell the fear?

Well, the Pinglet was angelic for all the plane rides. She didn't sleep much (of course), and I kept waiting for her trademark Emily Rose-like shrieks of annoyance to come pouring out of her mouth, but amazingly enough, she found enough entertainment in looking at the other passengers, chewing up the magazines (which is pretty much all they're good for, really), and smearing food all over my shirt and pants. She hardly used any of the toys that we stuffed into our bags.

In New York, the Pinglet was a minor celebrity and the paparazzi (aka, my family and friends) were out in full force taking photos of her awake/asleep/crying/laughing/staring out into space from jet lag/looking around in confusion at all the non-Asian faces she saw. We're now back in Japan, and I think she thinks that her whirlwind tour was all a dream.

Next time, I think we're going to pack her in our carry-on luggage. I think she'll just about fit.

2 of you feeling verklempt. Tawlk amongst yourselves:

I missed your updates. Glad to have you back! (And I think any future practice runs should involve a stop in Fukushima- it would be so nice to meet the little world traveller (and her parents) in person!
