Genographic Project

Posted by kuri, ping, the pinglet, & mini-ping on 11/04/2005
I am now a part of a revolutionary project called the "Genographic Project", sponsored by National Geographic! My kit came in the mail the other day.

This is the kit. It came with a DNA testing kit, brochure and DVD explaining about the project. Unfortunately, even though we live in the technological capital of the world, we don't have a DVD so I will have to put off watching it until someone is kind enough to lend or give us their old DVD machine.

The project is based on the idea that we are all decended from one African ancestor and that at some point, we "left our African cradle and colonized the world. Yet the saga of what must have been our greatest epic journey has lain untold for ages....we are all effectively cousins, separated by no more than 2,000 generations." Doesn't that make you want to go out and find your connections with your other 5,999,999,999 other relatives?

3 of you feeling verklempt. Tawlk amongst yourselves:

That sounds very cool- what will happen to the information after?

What they do is take the DNA samples and match them up with the data that they have in their database to see which route your family tree may have taken from Africa. I think that the information will be published or in a documentary somewhere once they have received permission from the people who have participated in the project.
