100 Things About Me

Posted by kuri, ping, the pinglet, & mini-ping on 11/07/2005

What do you get when you cross a Irish/English/Newfie dad with a Greek/Czech/Pennsylvania Dutch mom? A nightmare for genealogists! And now marry off that little product to a Japanese guy and what happens???

  1. I've been married since 2000.
  2. I've known my husband since 1995.
  3. We got married twice: once in a church in a Roman Catholic ceremony and once in a Shinto shrine in full Japanese kimono regalia.
  4. My middle name is Rae. I hated it when I was little and used to say that my name was Marie. But now I like it.
  5. My parents wanted to name me Janet Lynn but they didn't want me to have a complex since there was a famous ice skater with that name.
  6. I am the oldest of five and act like it.
  7. My dad was a cop in NYC during the years I grew up and was frequently mistaken for a Spanish-speaking person. He is now a carpenter.
  8. He made a log cabin dollhouse for my sister and I for Christmas.
  9. My mom graduated college after many years of hard work and is a paralegal.
  10. We look exactly alike.
  11. My parents are truly inspirational.
  12. When I was little, I wanted to be an astronaut and in my spare time sing on Broadway and run the 100 meter in the Olympics with Flo Jo.
  13. Obviously, I had lots of dreams and a very active imagination as a child.
  14. I studied French, Italian and Spanish in high school, and Russian and Japanese in college.
  15. I can't speak any of them anymore, except for Japanese.
  16. I am a book hound and read anything with print...that includes the backs of cereal boxes.
  17. The house could fall in around me and I wouldn't hear it if my head was buried in a book.
  18. My IQ is somewhere between 125 and 130.
  19. I am 5' 2" tall and weigh...did you really think I would tell you that? Ha!
  20. I wish I was taller (and lighter).
  21. I love chocolate and would eat it all day every day if I could.
  22. I played sweeper for 20 years on different soccer teams.
  23. Except when I was in Japan and got the sh*t kicked out of me by the all men's league that I played in.
  24. I ran the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter sprints for 10 years.
  25. I was pretty fast. When I was 15 years old, my best time in the 100 was 12.9 (seconds, not minutes).
  26. I got stress fractures in my legs from running and never got back into the sport.
  27. I have brown hair laced through with silver highlights that is beautifully colored and green eyes.
  28. I have a scar on my forehead and under my chin from falling into the fireplace when I was younger.
  29. My left foot is bigger than my right foot, which makes finding shoes difficult. They're either too big or too small.
  30. I'm beginning to sound like Quasimodo.
  31. I am from New York, live in Japan, and am a mutt. I have family from Ireland, England, Greece, Czechoslovakia, and the Pennsylvania Dutch region.
  32. I love doing genealogy.
  33. I found my Greek relatives online and went to visit them in Athens in 2003. They were wonderful people and welcomed me with open arms...even though they had no idea who I was.
  34. I am Roman Catholic, although according to my Greek relatives, I should have been brought up Greek Orthodox.
  35. I hate George W. Bush and am liberal, liberal, liberal.
  36. I've never met anyone famous, except for my "I voted for you" gaff, when I met Al Gore in Shanghai. It was truly humiliating.
  37. I worked as a waitress for eight years to put together money for college. It definitely made me appreciate how hard people work in the service industry. These are the people who are never off, even when you are. Remember that.
  38. I've done a fair amount of traveling but there are so many places that I still want to visit.
  39. I once spent two months traveling through China and Russia on the Trans Siberian, as well as the UK and Ireland.
  40. I learned how to drive from my father, who taught all of us kids. Any accidents I've had are not attributable to him.
  41. I will be going for my Japanese driver's license as soon as I get up the courage.
  42. I don't believe many conspiracy theories, but I enjoy listening to them.
  43. I hate touching paper after I've been in the bath. I also can't stand when someone grinds their teeth.
  44. I am all over the bed when I sleep. Thank God, E7 stays in one place.
  45. I need to be woken up easily, with someone talking nicely to me. Don't try to wake me up by throwing on the light and yelling my name. I will be pissed at you for the rest of the day.
  46. I starred appeared in a few musicals in high school and one opera in college.
  47. I am a mezzo-soprano and studied music for 6 years, including a stint at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. I didn't enjoy it very much but thought it would improve my voice.
  48. I sang in an a cappella jazz group and classical chamber choir at university.
  49. I am not a morning person. Nighttime is where I am most active...kind of like an owl.
  50. E7's cheerfulness in the mornings sometimes irritates me.
  51. I've never been arrested but as the child of a NYC cop, we were able to take rides in police cars, get put in jail and fingerprinted. How's that for fun at the annual Christmas party?
  52. I am quite knowledgeable about cars, since I grew up driving cars that could be fixed with the homegrown remedies that my dad made up.
  53. I miss having a car that doesn't work. There's no more adventure.
  54. I am nearsighted and can't see 3 inches in front of my face without corrective lenses.
  55. I've worn glasses since I was in 4th grade and contact lenses since I was 16.
  56. I hate my glasses.
  57. I had my tonsils out when I was two years old.
  58. And I remember bits and pieces of it, even though everyone says that it is impossible to have memories from such a young age.
  59. I'm not afraid of dying. I think it will be the ultimate travel experience...I just hope it will be painless.
  60. I wish someone would pay me to travel and write about it.

  72. I wish I was taller.
  73. I am a coffee fiend.
  74. I hate cleaning my apartment and only clean once a week.
  75. I hate to iron so E7's shirts are all wrinkled.

  77. I miss my family and friends.
  78. I miss NY.
  79. I don't like talking on the telephone if I can meet up with you face-to-face.
  80. I have a cell phone but never turn it on.
  81. I am a little claustrophobic and almost ripped off a face mask during a facial because I thought I couldn't breathe. A little extreme, don't you think?
  82. I was in Moscow the day that Princess Diana died, and was heading to London the next day.
  83. I am very good at calculus but am awful at arithmetic. Which is more useful in daily life?

  85. I love champagne and sparkly wine.
  86. I love anything and everything sparkly.
  87. I am afraid that when I am older I will wear all my sparkly jewelry all at once.

  93. I talk too much and crack jokes when I am nervous.
  94. I love cheese.
  95. My pet peeves are women who wear skin-tight jeans with high heels and cheap commercials. But when you combine the two? Kill me now.
  96. I used to read books by the light on the stairs until the early hours of the morning. Maybe that is why my eyesight is so bad?
  97. I always think about what I am going to say before I say it.
  98. That has stood me well over the years.
  99. I am a very family and friend-oriented.
  100. I always root for the underdog.

Yeah, I totally forgot about making this list. Well, we are less busy at school now, so I have lots of time to blog. Anyway, I was going through your site and having lots of fun reading about stuff when I noticed your list. Interesting stuff, Christine! I never knew about your car thing. You wish for more adventure? Ah, one speaks too soon.

Love the list. You hate eggs and fruit? I live on eggs and fruit. Good think you aren't coming to the wedding as it is a brunch with fruit and eggs playing starring roles. I hear you about the car thing. I used to have to change a flat every couple of months and figured out how to "reset" the Escort when it wouldn't start. There was a secret button in the trunk.
