More thoughts on Katrina

Posted by kuri, ping, the pinglet, & mini-ping on 9/07/2005
Obviously, Hurricane Katrina has been on many people's minds, especially in the U.S. I am horrified not by what has happened, but what didn't happen in our reactions/actions before and after the fact.

Other than the Gomer Pyle-style of leadership by our one and only Dubya, one thing that has been on my mind lately is...why didn't Mayor Nagin have an evacuation plan in place? He, as the top elected official of the city, should have had a complete picture of the demographics that make up the city, including the fact that many people didn't have the means or infrastructure to get out of the city, when the mayor called for an evacuation. Even if he or the City of New Orleans didn't have the means or wherewithall to get an evacuation plan together, why wasn't one worked out with the state of Louisana? What have people been getting paid to do all these years?

While I think both the local and state government should answer these basic questions, it still doesn't give an excuse to Dubya, the Department of Homeland Sh*tcurity or anyone of the "powers that be" for why they weren't on the ball with this. It wasn't a surprise to anyone who has read the reports about New Orleans that have been out for years, decades even.

At the very least, this smacks of incompetence and lack of forward thinking--for whatever reasons you want to come up with. It is a tragedy of immense proportions.
