LDP in for another term

In Japanese general elections yesterday, Koizumi's party, the Libral Democratic Party, won a historic victory with a total of 296 seats...the second largest win in its 50 year history. This party has basically governed Japan for the past 50 years, except for a time in the early 1990s.

A general election was called for by Koizumi in August, after a postal privatization bill was not passed by his own party. Koizumi and the LDP effectively purged the party of those representatives that voted against the bill or didn't bother to show up to cast their vote.

While I generally support the privatization of postal services in Japan, Koizumi and his party have made this general election ONLY about this issue, even though there are other issues at hand, including the revision of the Japanese constitution, dwindling social security, the "silvering of Japan" and the low birthrate. It would be like having a presidential election in the U.S. solely based on setting up farm subsidies or something.

The problem with this is that Koizumi will now use this election results to do pretty much whatever he wants. Pretty scary thought...

Oh well...at least he isn't Ishihara in Tokyo.
